Holy Trinity pre-school children teamed up to create a poster to help celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Windham Area Interfaith Ministry, a Willimantic-based agency which Holy Trinity has supported since 2008. The poster will be displayed at a community picnic WAIM is hosting on Sunday, September 21, from 1-4p.

The children who made the sign after Divine Liturgy on Sunday, September 14, 2014, included Mason Fox, Evan Zadrozny, and twins Anna and Alexander Fetzko; the children water colors and markers to color the poster, after placing their hands down to be traced over. The project was organized by University of Connecticut junior Sarah Luft, an active member of Holy Trinity during her undergraduate years.  

“You will note outside the heart the poster is slightly smudged,” Sarah pointed out. “But this is perfect, as it truly indicates that it was the children who actively participated in making the poster. It is their work.”

Holy Trinity pastor, Very Revered Marc Vranes, then briefly spoke to the children about compassion and the Christian responsibility to always care for those in need.

The poster shows children’s helping hands and stick figures of a family, which reflects our church’s annual participation in the WAIM Adopt a Family program. During each Christmas season, Holy Trinity is matched with a local family in need. Holy Trinity parishioners then purchase gifts for their adopted family who otherwise might not have gifts for their children to open on Christmas morning. The gifts are wrapped after Liturgy on the Sunday prior to the Nativity Feast at Holy Trinity, then delivered to the family we have adopted. Members from our community have always been warmly received by our adopted family where carols are sung and hugs are exchanged.

Members from Holy Trinity also participate in WAIM’s annual Walk for Warmth the Sunday after Thanksgiving each year. The entire Windham County area in invited to make the two-mile walk which is preceded by an Interfaith Thanksgiving Service and followed by fellowship, refreshments, and music. The money on the Walk for Warmth is used to provide energy assistance to those in need who otherwise might not have heat or electricity during the cold winter months.

WAIM started in 1984 in the basement of a local church with the original intention of redistributing clothing to its neighbors in need.  WAIM has since grown to an organization that along with clothing, provides furniture, appliances, linens, career clothing and emergency financial assistance to over 8,000 people each year from Windham and twelve surrounding towns.

Holy Trinity parishioner Mrs Dorothy Sinchuk serves as a WAIM Board Member, however we are actively looking for a back-up delegate to attend a periodic meeting if Dot is not able to.
