Wonders of the Small Church

The small church has incredible importance and value, although it may not carry the pomp of churches in Europe and elsewhere. I have one particular small church in mind: ours.

Today we celebrated the triumphant Entrance of our Lord into Jerusalem, also called Palm Sunday, and is one of Twelve Great Feasts of liturgical year.

Traditionally, willow branches, in addition to palm branches, are blessed in the Orthodox churches on this day. Pussy willow branches are the symbols of palm branches, with which the inhabitants of Jerusalem covered the path of Jesus Christ when he entered the city.

In many countries, palm branches are substituted with pussy willow because palm branches might not be are not readily available. Palm Sunday is often called the "Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem", is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the liturgical year, and marks the beginning of Holy Week.
