Wonders of the Small Church

The small church has incredible importance and value, although it may not carry the pomp of churches in Europe and elsewhere. I have one particular small church in mind: ours.

Many members of the Holy Trinity made the short pilgrimage to St. Mary's Ukrainian Orthodox Church, in New Britain, CT, this past weekend (September 6-7, 2024) to be in the presence of the Holy Kardiotissa (The Tender Heart) myrrh-flowing, miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. The icon was brought from St. George Orthodox Church in Taylor, PA, for a two day residency.

Friday evening, multiple clergy served a Moleben to the Mother-of-God. Before showing the icon, Father Mark Leasure, Rector of St. George, shared several stories and testimonials about it's miraculous healing power. Father Mark then removed the icon from its encasement while the faithful looked on in awe and wonder. At one point he exclaimed "put your hands out!" He then brought the icon around the church while many received the wonderfully fragrant myrrh into their awaiting hands. After completing a procession around the church, Father Mark returned the icon to its encasement. Directly following, the gathered faithful venerated the icon and received anointings.

The next morning, several Holy Trinity parishioners joined many others at Akathist service where everyone had the opportunity to venerate the icon and be anointed with the myrrh once more before the Holy Kardiotissa returned home to Pennsylvania.
