Wonders of the Small Church

The small church has incredible importance and value, although it may not carry the pomp of churches in Europe and elsewhere. I have one particular small church in mind: ours.

Long-time friend of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church, Aaron Friar was ordained to the Holy Diaconate by His Grace, Bishop Daniil, Vicar bishop of Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Diocese of the USA, Canada, and Australia, on Saturday, June 24, 2017, at his home parish, Holy Resurrection Orthodox Church, in Allston, MA.

Deacon Aaron’s friendship with Holy Trinity extends back nearly two decades. It was at Holy Trinity that he was betrothed to his wife, Anna (Sukharev), on the Feast of Holy Ascension in 2002. Anna had attended Holy Trinity regularly while she was a student in Rhode Island in the early 2000's.  Deacon Aaron and his family have maintained regular contact with Holy Trinity and visited on a consistent basis over the years. He and his family last visited with us in early June, 2017.

“It is with great joy that we welcome Deacon Aaron into the ranks of the clergy of the Orthodox Church,” Bishop Daniil said. “You are indeed worthy.”

Received into the Orthodox Church in 1993, Deacon Aaron’s service to the Orthodox Church is commendable.

“Deacon Aaron has devoted much of his adult life to building the Orthodox Church,” Holy Trinity pastor, V. Rev. Marc Vranes said. “Deacon Aaron has served the church with humility and is a model of Christian joy. Whatever has been asked of him, he has taken on. The spirit in which he has served has often been more important than the act of service itself. His daily witness to the Resurrected Christ is quite beautiful and deserves special mention.

“Our church in Willimantic, Connecticut, whole-heartedly offers to the newly ordained, Deacon Aaron, ‘Axios’. ‘Worthy’.”

Deacon Aaron received his Master of Divinity degree from Holy Cross School of Theology in Brookline, MA, in December, 2011. Deacon Aaron will soon begin his Diaconal ministry at Holy Transfiguration Orthodox Church in Syracuse, NY. He will be a great asset to his new community.

He and Anna have five children: Anastasia, Tatiana, Nicolai, Alexandra, and Alexey.

Holy Trinity was represented at Deacon Aaron’s ordination by Fr Marc and Mr Timothy Fetzko, HTOC Parish Council President, webmaster, and photographer. As his gift to Deacon Aaron, Mr Fetzko photographed his ordination. Also in attendance were Mr & Mrs Fred (Vickie) Friar, Deacon Aaron’s devoted and loving parents, and Mr & Mrs Viktor (Paraskeva) Sukharev, his in-laws. Also serving at Deacon Aaron’s ordination was his brother-in-law, Deacon Andrey Sukharev, who is also attached to Holy Resurrection in Allston.

Many Years to Deacon Aaron, Anna, and family.
